Official Cornhole Bags – Buyers Guide

Cornhole bag review

When it comes to purchasing your cornhole bags, quality matters. These corn/plastic pellet filled bags are lovingly abused during game play! Cornhole bags get thrown around and tend to hit the board pretty hard. (Or for the less skilled, hit the ground pretty hard.) Cornhole bags take a beating, and as such you want to make sure you have quality bags.

This means good quality canvas and stitching more than anything else. There is nothing worse that having the stitching on one of your cornhole bags start to come apart in the middle of a game! Nobody wants to see your corn all over the place.

I’m going to provide you with two recommendations for cornhole bags. One set for when you are going to be playing outside and weather may be a concern. The other will be more traditional corn filled bags, which are great for the outdoors, but need to be brought inside when it gets wet out. These are not cheap cornhole bags that are going to fall apart on your or only last one season.

Weather Resistant Cornhole Bags

In my opinion,  SC Cornhole Games makes the finest bags out there. Cornhole bags have been making bags for well over 10 years and have amazing reviews on Amazon. These cornhole bags are made from a very durable material called 12 ounce duck canvas. Thanks to the durability of the material, these bags are perfect for any location of play (grass, gravel, concrete, indoors).

These cornhole bags are the official weight (14-16 ounces) and size (6″x6″). If you have ever used some bags that come in the cheap retail store sets, you will immediately feel the difference in quality.

OK, so here is what makes these bags weather resistant.

These cornhole bags are filled with recycled plastic pellets, making them weather and critter resistant (critters like corn…plastic pellets not so much). Some people might complain about the bags feeling or behaving different compared to corn filled bags. I think those people are just looking for an excuse as to why their game isn’t better!

Honestly, I’ve played a lot of cornhole and would choose plastic pellet filled bags over corn. Cornhole bags are longer lasting and more consistent over time.  And if you really, really, really want that authentic corn filled bag experience, they now make a plastic pellets in the shape of a corn kernel.  You get the best of both worlds!

I love a good guaranty! This shows me that the manufacturer stands behind their product. These SC Cornhole bags come with a 1-YEAR GUARANTY. If there are any issues with your cornhole bags SC Cornhole games will replace your bags in the case of failure. I’ve never had to replace mine in the first year of use…and that is after hours and hours of games!

SC Cornhole Games cornhole bags also come in a wide variety of matched colors. There are over 30 sets to choose from!

Corn Filled Cornhole Bags

Cornhole bags filled with corn…yes, believe it or not this is how the game of cornhole got its name.

As mentioned above, I personally prefer the plastic filled bags. Most of my game play is outside. And I will be honest, I have forgotten to bring them in a few times after a late night of drinking beer and playing. In the morning they are damp from the dew, but none the worse. Leave them out in the sun to dry and they are good as new. You can’t really say that about the corn filled bags.

Why go with corn filled bags then? Well, if you are a traditionalist, there is something about corn that feels and sounds a little different. Over time the corn breaks down in the bags giving them a unique softer feel in your hand. At one time, all tournament play required that bags be corn filled. However, due to a feed corn shortage, the ACA now officially allows plastic pellet filled cornhole bags.

I’m going to recommend you check out corn filled bags from JMEXSUSS.  Cornhole bags quality and reviews are off charts for their bags with thousands of positive reviews.

Cheap Cornhole Bags – Cornhole Bags Sale

If you see “Cheap Cornhole Bags” or “Cornhole Bags Sale” I would recommend you avoid them. The odds are pretty good that while the bags will work, and you got a “good deal”, they will fail on you. You’ll be stuck trying to play with only 3 bags…which is a total pain in the cornhole.

Sure, you may save a few $$$ on a set of 8 cornhole bags, but I think you will regret it!  If you are tempted to get a cheap set of cornhole bags, my recommendation is to get them as a backup to your good set of bags.  Or just buy two cheap sets and call it good.  They key point here is that if you go with cheap cornhole bags, have backup bags ready to go.

Carry Bag For Your Cornhole Bags

Of course, you are going to need a bag to carry your bags! I do recommend getting a bag for a couple of reasons.

  • Without a bag you end up putting them on the ground where they get dirty. Or you store them somewhere, and one always falls behind something and you have to struggle to find it. Don’t do that to yourself!
  • Having your bags in a bag makes them so much easier to carry. This is especially true if you are trying to carry a board as well as bags.
  • Make it really easy to toss them into the car.

Sticking with the quality of at SC Cornhole games, I recommend you get their quality carry bag.

Of course, you could always use an old pillow case, stuff them in your cargo pants or stack them on your head. Please don’t be that person. Get the bag.

  1. A very enlightening website. You have listed products such as the drink holders and carry cases that I didn’t know existed for the cornhole boards. Also, the accessories for night games-the lights around the board as well as around the cornholes was especially useful.

The tabletop cornhole board section was a big help also. It’s nice to be able to take the game inside during inclement weather. Even though they are much smaller they can still be very entertaining on frigid nights.

    1. Thanks for the positive feedback Dell!

We have way more fun with our tabletop cornhole set than we probably should!  When we play indoors the game takes on a new dimension.  Tossing from behind the couch or over a book shelf…we get pretty creative.  They also make an awesome gift for Christmas.  Last year I got a set for a white elephant party at work…the tabletop cornhole set was the most popular gift.

There are lots of really cool ways to trick out your cornhole board and make it unique.  Hopefully you had a chance to poke around the website and get some ideas.  If there was something you were looking for and didn’t see, please let me know and we’ll get it for you!

      Have fun out there!

  2. I got to hand it to you, never would I thought one the more under rated part of a game could make for such an informative, detailed and at point, humorous read.

In many cornhole discussions its usually about the board having this problem or that problem. Never have I heard or read about ways to improve the cornhole bags.

You brought a joy out over the simpler part of playing cornhole!

    I too enjoy the game.

    1. Well thanks so much for the compliment and encouragement.  Here at The Cornhole, we love the game as well!

Our goal is to spread the cornhole love to as many people around the world as we can.  And while doing that, we want to make sure you are getting the best deal for your money.  That is why we dedicate a lot of our time to reviewing products and find the best place for you to purchase them.

In the coming months we’ll be adding some instructional videos and posts…everything from how to toss a bag, to the proper way to apply a board wrap.

Now, it’s up to you to spread the joy.  Find some friends and play some cornhole!

  3. Hi

And thank you for great article about cornhole bags, now I know when I buy them they need to be in good quality if you wondering way I never heard about this cornhole bags then that is because I come from Iceland 🙂
    Best regards
    Salomon.

    1. Salomon,

Here at The Cornhole we are always happy when we can introduce people to the game of cornhole (or bag toss, bean bags, baggo…whatever you want to call the game is fine by us!)

Cornhole is about tossing small sacks of “corn” at a board with a whole in it.  Land it on the board and you get a point.  Get it in the hole and you get 3 points.  For the complete rules of how to play cornhole check out How to Play Cornhole.  I think you’ll see it is a very easy game to learn…but difficult to master!

Awesome that you are from Iceland!  I love seeing the game get exposure outside of the USA!  You should order a cornhole set today!!!  You might be the only person in all of Iceland with a cornhole set.  Think about how popular you will be!

Thanks for stopping by!  When you get your cornhole set, be sure to take some pictures of you playing in Iceland and post them here!  We’d love to see them!

  4. In a game that could be played outdoor more than indoor, the wisest decision is to prevent oneself from showing up in the market shopping for accessories at the end of every 8th game. The embarrassment would be worse when they get damaged during game activities.Game is about hobby as well as passion, is investing on decent game kits and accessories supposed to be a problem?I like your website for honest reviews on cornhole board and accessories. Cheers!

    1. Hello Autofreak!

Yep, there is nothing worse that blowing out some bags while in the middle of a game. You don’t want to have to resort to sharing bags…or worse, stapling or taping them back together!  It happens…we’ve all been there.

Two ways to avoid this: Buy quality bags and have backup bags on hand.

A set of 8 is less than $30.  And make sure you get colors that match the sets you are playing with!

For a lot of people cornhole is both a hobby, passion…and a way to make some money.  Some of the larger tournaments have tops prices of over $25k.  Nothing like poker or gaming tournaments…but still…getting paid money to play cornhole…sign me up!

  5. Hello Mike, nice product review. I have never really heard of Cornhole before, but after doing minor research, I now understand what the game is and how it is played. I would love to try out this game, it seems fun while at a party getting wasted (LLS). I will have to buy some cornbags soon when I’m ready to play the game

Thanks again, and continue to do what you do!!

    1. Thanks Ahmand!  Hopefully you found it to be useful in your cornhole bag purchasing decision! 🙂

Cornhole is a lot of fun (you’ve probably hear it called corn toss or Baggo and didn’t realize it is the same game.)

We are always trying to spread the word about cornhole around the country and the world for that matter (we get a lot of folks from outside the US that are curious about the game).

Anyway, if you are totally new to the game, I recommend starting with a complete cornhole set.  Where to Find Cheap Cornhole Boards

  6. I remember the orthers blog about the Cornhole bords. These bags looks great and they durable for more than few games and for sure they will give you that firm grip. I also love that carry bag for fact that I looks water resistant incase their  rain while transportating you bags will always dry and ready for the next game  which is very great.

    1. Hey there Charles.

If you take good care of your bags they should last a long time.  I personally don’t use a waterproof sack for my cornhole bags as they tend to not breath very well.  If the bags have any dampness (from hands, weather, beer) and then you but them in an air tight sack, they are going to mildew.  I prefer to use a mesh bag to hold my cornhole bags (similar to the ones used in school for all the balls).

Hope you are getting warmed up for summer cornhole, BBQ and good times!

  7. Hi! I want to purchase quality cornhole bags. And what you have mentioned about the traditional corn filled cornhole bags has also clicked with me. I’ll try these SC Cornhole Games cornhole bags. I really don’t matter the colors, but I really want to feel the traditional aspect of the game. Thank you very much for writing this post!

PD: I think I know somebody that has used an old pillow case! LOL. I’ll share your post in social media so they laugh when they see my comment.

    1. Hey, if you are desperate to play to game of cornhole you’ll do almost anything!  I can totally see using an old pillow case to make some bags…that is awesome.  One time we had a great family cornhole tournament going and a couple of our cornhole bags broke open at the seams.  We didn’t have a sewing kit, but we did have a stapler.  Believe it or not, those staples held till the end of the tournament!

Even though the staples lasted, I learned my lesson and now always have a backup set of bags.  They are cheap enough to never have to use a staples or pillow cases!
