Review – ZENY Solid Wood Cornhole Set

Zeny Cornhole Wood Set

A friend that manages a hotel on the Oregon coast was to host a huge wedding party over the summer. I remember her saying this group would end up reserving 30 of the 36 rooms on the property

They took the place over! There must have been close to a hundred people at this small hotel.

As a gift, the manager wanted to provide something of a keepsake that would not only entertain the guest during their stay, but also remind them of the bride and groom’s special day.

My mind of course immediate jump to cornhole as it often does!

Graduation? Cornhole!

Baby shower? Cornhole!

Vasectomy? Lots of cold packs…followed by lost of Cornhole! Why is it that a vasectomy and the game of cornhole seem to have so much in common? Leave you comments below! 😉

Anyway, back to our story….

After some convincing from me, the manager decided to get cornhole sets for the wedding party with the name of the bride and groom and the wedding day on them.

The couple wanted to make sure that everyone in the wedding party and the parents ended up getting a cornhole set. This worked out to be 10 completed sets. With a budget of $1200, it was up to me to find a way to make it happen.

If you haven’t guessed already, we ended up using the ZENY solid wood cornhole boards I’m reviewing in this post.

There were a few key things I was looking for when picking out the right boards. First and foremost was cost. They had to be less than $100 with bags in order to stay under budget.

Because we were going to create a vinyl decal with the groom and brides name and wedding date, the boards could be bare or finished (we preferred finished as we didn’t want to have to paint or stain them).

The Boards

Considering the price of the ZENY cornhole boards, you’d think they would contain cheap or lightweight wood.

Now, while these boards are NOT as heavy-duty as the ones you’d make in your garage, or spend $250 on…they are very solid. Instead of 2×4 construction, the frame is made from something close to 1×3 pine or fir. The top is made from 1 to 2 inch plywood.

Zeny Wood Cornhole Board Construction

Thanks to good overall design and construction they look good and are very solid.

To prevent the dreaded “bag bounce”, often seen in cheaper boards, the ZENY boards have a cross member that really stiffens things up and prevents the bounce. Again, these things are tough and can withstand the weight of an average adult (not that climbing on your cornhole boards is ever recommended!)

Please don’t let this guy climb on your boards!

Keep this guy off your cornhole boards

The surface of these cornhole boards are “unfinished”. In our case we ended up painting them to match the wedding colors before applying our vinyl decals and then added a quick coat of sealer to prevent the vinyl from peeling up and to provide a smoother finish.

And to be clear, technically these boards do come with a smooth varnished surface (can easily be painted or customized) . You could easily stand this board down a little and apply a stain and urethane finish if you wanted that natural wood look. If you tried to apply stain without sanding first, I don’t think it would take.

These boards by ZENY are regulation size of 4 feet x 2 feet. A lot of people don’t pay attention to the size of the board, thinking they are getting an inexpensive regulation set when really they just purchased a tailgate set (3 feet x 2 feet).

The Bags

The bags that come with this set are nothing special to write home about. These are all-weather bags and they’ll last you for a while. With that said I highly recommend you buy some good quality bags and have replacement bags on the ready.  Bags break and you don’t want to have to share or even worse, stop playing!

With many of the cornhole sets we’ve reviewed, you don’t get to pick you bag color. You get red and blue and you have to just be happy with that. Since we had no room in the budget to buy bags that matched the wedding colors, we stuck with the old red and blue bags.

Zeny All Weather Cornhole Bags

If we had the money in the budget, we would have liked to get some custom embroidered bags.  Maybe next time!

There were some complaints from guest at the wedding, as well as online, about the bags not being the correct weight and having an odor. I experienced this as well and found they were at least an ounce light and had kind of an oil or diesel smell.

In my opinion, the bags that come with this set should be considered disposable. Use them a couple of times and then replace them with some good quality bags. You’ll thank me!

The Carry Case

The Zeny solid wood cornhole set comes with a nifty carry case. Super handy to have if you want to carry everything you need in one trip and like to keep your stuff organized.

The carry case holds both boards and all the bags. The entire set is under 40 pounds, so anyone should have no trouble carrying these boards using the two straps.

This carry case is not waterproof, but it will provide UV protection as well as minor prevention of dents, dings and scratched.

Warranty and Shipping

We didn’t end up having to return any of the board because of defect. So, I can’t really say how their customer support department is. However, since we bought them through Amazon, we could have easily returned them if needed. I did find a few customers that had issues with their bags. After contacting ZENY, they received new bags within a week.

As for shipping, even if you don’t have Amazon Prime, ZENY offers free shipping. The boards are in inventory and usually arrive within 2-3 days of your order. The ZENY cornhole set was well packaged. None of the 10 sets we ordered had any issues.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a very affordable cornhole set, I highly recommend you check out this set from ZENY.

For under $100, you get a well-built regulation size cornhole set that comes with everything you need to start playing.

And if you are looking to customize boards for a special event, it’s hard to beat the value. By saving some money on the boards, you can spend a little on custom vinyl decals or a score board!
