Cornhole Scoreboard Buyers Guide

Cornhole Scoreboard Buyers Guide

Cornhole season is upon us!

I’m so excited that the weather is starting to cooperate. I can cut my grass, and setup the boards once again!

Once we start playing…we play a lot.  And we like to enjoy a “few” cold beverages while doing so.

And let’s face it, after a few beers, it becomes way too difficult to keep accurate score. (I can keep score drunk, just not an accurate score.)

Anyway, I like to focus on playing the game, enjoying a beer or two, and talking with my friends and family. Keeping score, and the disagreements that often occur around what the score “should be” suck.

I want to have fun, drink beer and not have to keep track of the score in my head or on a scrap piece of paper.

Lucky for us, there is a solution…

SCOREBOARDS!

OK, so you probably already knew about scoreboards, else you wouldn’t be here reading this review.

But wait! Did you know that some of the scoreboards have an awesome secret feature?

I’m not sure about the science and engineering that went into this secret feature, but it is pretty amazing.

The secret feature: Drink holders!I will drink to that! Cheers!

You heard me right! You no longer must you hold your drink while tossing your bags. Or worse, have to set your beer on the ground! The scoreboard will hold your beer for you.  I’ll drink to that.

Now, time to get serious and review a few of my favorite scoreboards.

There are two types of scoreboards I am going to review here: those that attach to your board, and those that don’t (but hold your drinks).

Decal Magnetic Overlay

For those of you that don’t mind holding your drink or leaving it on the ground (animals!) you can opt for the decal magnetic overlays.

These score boards are made from metal and are attached to your board using wood screws, or double-sided tape.

TIP: You can easily spray paint the magnetic score keeping pieces to match the theme of your boards. For backup “keepers”, pick up some washers at the hardware store and paint them at the same time you are painting the keepers that came with the scoreboard!

Let’s take a look at my top two picks for magnetic scoreboards.

Midwest-Masterpiece Cornhole Magnetic Scoreboard

Magnetic Cornhole Scoreboard

Magnetic Cornhole Scoreboard

This scoreboard set comes with one (you really only need one) 0-21 Black on White background numbered Score Keeper Plate and two USA made pawn magnets. You’ll also get a round flat washer to mount on the underside of your board for convenient magnet storage when not in use.

The plate is 3” x 22” plate and goes through a high-tech oven to create a long-lasting baked on white powder coat finish.

One thing I really like about the company that makes these products is that they give back to their community. They have teamed up with their local Cardinal Center that provides job opportunities to those with disabilities and life challenges. The caring hands of these folks have packaged your magnets with fasteners.

GoSports Premium Cornhole Scoreboard

GoSports Magnetic Scoreboard for Cornhole BoardsMagnetic Cornhole Scoreboard

This scoreboard set comes with one 0-21 Black on White background numbered Score Keeper Plate and four magnetic keepers.

The plate is 2.5” x 22” plate and quickly mounts to wood boards with screws or to composite or metal boards with 3M tape which is included.

Personally, I prefer the Midwest-Masterpiece scoreboard. I like that it is a little bigger and doesn’t have the (in my opinion) unnecessary “TEAM 1” and “TEAM 2”. I just think the score board look cleaner and are a little easier to read.

Score Towers

The score towers take your score keeping to the next level, making the score more visible…and did I mention they hold your beer?

There are two score towers that I really like…either of them would be a great addition to your cornhole set.

Backyard Scoreboards – Score Tower Combo Set

Cornhole Score Tower with Drink Holder

Cornhole Scoreboard Tower

This combo set includes one Score Tower with drink holders and one companion drink holder. These are completely free-standing. There is an inverted “U” at the bottom of each post that you push into the ground with your foot. (If you wanted to use these indoors, you would need to create some kind of base for them. A 3 gallon bucket filled with sand works nicely.)

The scoreboard is double-sided and features dual columns making it easy to read from either side.  The included red and black “score clips” make it really easy to update the score and provide high visibility.

USA MADE – This product is made in the USA with heavy gauge, steel and black powder coat paint for a long life.

The Score Tower scoreboard is made from all-weather plastics designed to stand up to outdoor use. And while it is “all-weather”, if you live where it is wet, I recommend you bring them indoors when not in use.

The scoreboard is 58 inches tall and can be taken down and stored in the box it ships in when you are not playing.

If you are looking for a no-frills, affordable scoreboard with holders for your beer(s), this is the set for you!

Teamaze – Cornhole Scoreboard Set

Cornhole Scoreboard and Drink Holder

This is the scoreboard set is really nice and can be used for more than just cornhole.  It comes with two tables, each with enough room to hold a couple of drinks and your bags, and a well made scoreboard.

The cornhole scoreboard is easily adjusted up to 43.3 inches making it useful for all heights, which is perfect corn hole scorekeeper equipment for adults and kids. It allows you to change the score clips while standing instead of having to bend over like you have to do with scoreboard mounted to the back of your boards.

There are no tools required to set it up, and everything folds up neatly for easy storage.

Accidents happen…drinks get spilled.  Since the table top is plastic, there are no worries when it comes to cleanup.  We’ve had some BBQ’s where we just needed some extra table space for folks standing around talking.  Just remove the scoreboard, raise to the highest height, and you have a couple of mobile tables for your guests.

I really like this set!  It has amazing reviews on Amazon and is well worth the price!

Accessorize!

Here are a couple of items you can add in addition to your scoreboard.

Lighting

We play into the wee dark hours. To do that we added hole lights to our cornhole boards. After adding the board lights we could see the boards, but we couldn’t see the scoreboard….so we added a light to the scoreboard as well! Now we never have to stop playing!

The simplest and cheapest solution I found, was to pick up a couple of LED clip on lights. They attach to the top of the scoreboard and provide just the right amount of light to see the score, and most importantly, locate your beer.

If you end up going with the wood scoreboard, a nice addition is a bottle opener. This one is my favorite, but there are lots of other cool bottle openers available on Amazon.

Conclusion

Well, I hope this quick review of cornhole scoreboards was helpful for you.

Keeping score in your head (not reliable) or on a piece of paper just isn’t going to cut it. It detracts from the enjoyment of the game…  How does it detract?  two big reasons for me personally.  First, it does take some mental effort to keep track in my head and I really should be focused on sinking another cornhole.  Second,  everyone watching the game always wants to know the score which slows things down and breaks my concentration.

Anyway, spending a little money on a scoreboard will help you avoid score keeping squabbles and the unnecessary use of your brain.

Now, where was my beer? Oh yeah, over there on the scoreboard table…

OK now, get out there and play some cornhole!

  1. Now what a clever idea. I too like to have a few beers when tossing the bean bags. And I for one was never very good at keeping score in my head. Especially after the few beers start to take effect. And the fact that they actually hold your beers also is a major plus. I personally like the towers. Less chance of spilling your beer bending over to mark up your score. Just my opinion. LOL

    1. Mike,

When I got my scoreboards, my life changed.  : )  We actually pull them out even when we are not playing.  During a BBQ or get together, it’s nice to have a place where people can stand around and talk…and set their beer or wine.

These scoreboards perform for multiple uses!  We also pull them out for the occasional horseshoe or washers game.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  2. It is great that I can buy something that will help keep score for me when I play cornhole. After having a couple adult beverages keeping score starts to get difficult. I also like how some of them come with cup holders for drinks that is a great idea. Do they make team logo ones?

    1. Hello Paul,

You know, I haven’t really seen any scoreboards that allow you to custom them to order.  You can of course customize to your hearts content using vinyl decals or paint.  I’ve also seen folks cut out placards from birch plywood or corrugated plastic…and then attach them to the top of the scoreboard.

That is one thing that I really love about the cornhole community…they are a creative bunch!

Not willing to put down your beer or bags, but still want to keep score?  Check out to gem… 🙂

Now get out there and play some cornhole!

  3. For any event, a holder for your favorite beverage is a must. I am a musician and, of course, I have a drink holder on my mic stand.

I like the options available to fit your budget. Also a creative approach to keeping the game going into the wee hours is appreciated.

    Overall enjoyed reviewing your page.

    Rick

    1. Hey Rick, thanks for stopping by!  Having a cornhole scoreboard with drink holders is pretty awesome…hard to imagine how we managed without them!

A drink holder on your mic stand? Now that is something I have never seen before.  For some reason I imagined your drink holder on one side of the stand, and your tip jar on the other!  Now that would be cool!

Hope you get a chance to play some cornhole when you aren’t making music.

  4. Hi,

This is the first time that I’ve heard about the cornhole game. Looks fun!

Your post about the cornhole scoreboards is interesting and funny. Especially that your beer should always have a place in the game, be it in the ground or the scoreboard.

Haven’t seen people playing the game, but definitely having a good scoreboard is a must!

    Marita

    1. Hello there Marita.

Cornhole is a really fun game that anyone can play.  (And for the kids, it is a lot safer than lawn darts or horseshoes!)  You may have also heard of cornhole under different names: Baggo or bean bag toss are the most common.

If you want to get started enjoying the game, and want don’t want to spend a lot of money, I recommend the Sports Festival Set.  You’ll get everything you need to play for under $100 (and free shipping if you are an Amazon Prime member)

Money well spent if you ask me!  You’ll have hours and hours of fun.  And then if you really get into the game you can upgrade your boards and bags.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I loved this site! I love to play Cornhole but had never really looked it up or dove into the facts about Cornhole. I can’t even believe the drawings from, like, 3000 years ago that was found on a wall.
I certainly had no idea there were cornhole tournaments!
The scoring is very different from the rules I’ve played by in the past. That just goes to show we knew very little about the game. You have enlightened me & the next time I play this game will be done totally different. An I have you to thank for that. We always counted one score for each bag that went in the hole.
I shared this site with my boyfriend & he agreed it was really neat to know more about it. We are thinking about making a game for our family to play when we all get together. It will be fun.
I especially love the wraps that you can get to put on the boards instead of painting them. I will definitely come back to your site & order the wraps & bags when we get ready to do this project.
    It is great!!

    1. Paula,

So glad to hear that you loved our site!  We love the game of Cornhole, and love to share…sometimes too much.  😉

I’m glad you found the history of cornhole.  I do have to say that…well, I created that image that depicts a cave painting of the ancient people playing cornhole 3000 years ago.  I mean, it could have happened right?  So I took some creative license.

You should totally get a cornhole set for your family.  Whether you make them and decorate yourself, or buy them ready to go, you and your family will have hours and hours of fun playing cornhole.  If you have some woodworking skills and tools, making your own boards can be a very rewarding experience.

Please come back and visit us again soon.  If you have any questions about which board or bags to purchase, how to play, what beer is best paired with hotdogs…just let us know, we’d love to help!

  6. I like Gosports Premium and I needed something which can be mounted easily and fast. I actually wonder something about this board. I read before that the quality price ratio is quite important while buying score boards. I wonder whether this one has a good quality price ratio or not. What do you think about it?

    1. Ah, the old quality price price ratio…how many beers did you have before leaving this comment?  😉

Just kidding of course, that is a great question from someone that cares about getting the most value for their $$$.

The two cornhole board mounted scoreboard mentioned in my review are very similar in quality.  I really comes down to personal preference with respect to the look.  I personally like the Midwest-Masterpiece Cornhole Magnetic Scoreboard because of the clean and simple lines.

With that said, the GoSports Premium Cornhole Scoreboard will definitely be worth the money and will last for years and years.

OK, now you can go buy your scoreboard and then have a beer!

      Have fun out there!

  7. Thank you for these great cornhole scoreboard solutions. I can see how having a scoreboard would really help people who love the game of cornhole.
I can also see how adaptable many of these scoreboards are to other scoring sports. So it makes the more expensive items seem like an “investment” rather than a luxury.
I think it’s great that many of these scoreboard ideas have added a drinks holder. I know that when I have a party it’s hard to find enough drink holders for everyone.
Thanks for sharing these great ideas.

    1. Cornhole scoreboards are a life saver.  And they really take your game to the next level.

You bring up a great point!  There scoreboards are not limited to just cornhole.  You can use them for any of your favorite backyard games (badminton, horseshoes, free style belly flops….the list is endless).

The drink holders are a very nice added bonus! There is nothing worse than having your drink fall over in the grass when it is your turn to toss.  There is just no excuse for it! 🙂

For our cornhole set, we have the scoreboard with drink holders and then we picked up some Heavy Duty Outdoor Drink Holder Stakes for extra drinks.

Hope you are having a wonderful summer!  Get out there and play some cornhole and enjoy a cold one!

      All the best!
